The online OnixS FIX Dictionary has been updated for improved user experience in accessing the latest technical information for FIX5.0SP2 EP264.
Since its inception in 1992, the Financial Information eXchange (FIX) protocol has become a widely adopted defacto messaging standard for organizations in the financial markets to exchange internal and external data about pre-trade, order buys and sells, trade confirmations and allocations worth multiple trillions of dollars per year.
Over the years, the set of FIX Protocol message types, tags, tag enumerated values and datatypes has grown steadily. This is as a direct result of the successful adoption of the FIX Protocol standards over the last 30 years, based on the maturity of the technical standards, the open nature of the standards enabling multiple interoperable implementations, and the increased scope of adoption demands.
However, with this increased scope and range of FIX messaging contexts, the knowledge needed to understand the available FIX MsgTypes, Data Types, specific FIX message standards tag/value syntax and enumerations, has also increased dramatically in scope and complexity.
This is suitably illustrated by the increased FIX MsgType count. The FIX Tag MsgType <35> field defines the message type that is always the third field in the FIX message and is unencrypted.
This is easier to see in an example: |35=D| for a MsgType of NewOrderSingle<D>
There were only 27 MsgTypes in FIX4.0 from the early FIX Protocol developments. You can see a full list of the 27 MsgTypes in FIX4.0, plus their descriptions and structures here.
With the latest FIX extension pack of the FIX5.0SP2 version of the FIX Protocol in FIX5.0SP2 EP264 – there are 164 FIX MsgTypes.
To simplify this, the online OnixS FIX Dictionary has been updated for improved user experience in accessing the latest technical information for FIX5.0SP2 EP264.
These updates include cleaned out deprecated references and enumerations, updated MsgType and Data Type descriptions, and updates to include the latest FIX Extension Packs.
The OnixS FIX Dictionary is a freely available online reference tool that is designed for advanced technical reference to the FIX Protocol standards, usage scenarios, FIX message tag/value pair syntax and enumerations.
